Periodontitis is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Its development can not only be induced by a lack of oral hygiene but also by a weakened immune system, metabolic diseases, and unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol or an unhealthy diet. Whether slightly chronic or aggressive, in the end, if not treated, sooner or later the tooth or the implant will have to be taken out. Since periodontitis manifests itself as an inflammation of the periodontium, it is often mistaken as a localised disease and not as a general disease. The catalyst is a so-called microbial biofilm, which contains pathogenic bacteria.They multiply and attack teeth and gums as a result. Pathogenic germs can also be found in the gums of healthy people, but are kept under control by the immune system and symbiotic microorganisms. A functioning immunological defence system, therefore, plays an essential role in preventing pathogenic germs from multiplying.
